Food exporter country
A country blessed with abundance, Thailand is a net food exporter whose agricultural products are found in numerous countries around the world. Every year, exports from this sector of the economy earns Thailand no less than 200 billon Bath in revenue.
Thai agricultural products have undergone consistent quality improvements to meet the standards of the international market. Processing techniques have been introduced for a variety of end products in order to add to their value and raise their competitive potential in the international community. Food products from Thailand are most often processed and sold as frozen, dehydrated ready-to-eat canned food, although fresh product is exported on a limited basis.
Thailand primarily exports three groups of agricultural products to the world. The first group comprises various grains, which constitute Thailand’s most important export item. Thai rice, for example, is found in markets all around the world, and its Jasmine rice is highly valued and popular. Fishery products, including shrimps, fish and squid respectively, represent an increasingly important export commodity for Thailand. The third group, livestock items, is exported in frozen, fresh and processed forms.
As the products form these three groups of agricultural exports are still very early in their marketing development, they have yet to reach their impressive potential as revenue earners. To add value to those products, producers and exporters are using processing techniques that in most cases have rendered these items as either semi-processed, or fully processed, ready-to-eat products. Consequently, at present, the important Thai food products for export are processed seafood, fresh and processed vegetables and fruits, frozen poultry, and beverages.
In addition, Thailand also exports food products specifically prepared for Muslims. These products must be prepared as prescribed in Muslim religious teaching, and are known as Halal food. Food prepared in this manner will be exported only to Islamic countries. Meanwhile, health foods like bees’ milk and honey, herbal drinks, coconut jelly and Aloe Vera constitute yet another group of food with strong export potential to a number of international markets.
Japan, the United States, and countries in the European Community are major markets for Thailand’s food exports. Other potential export markets include Canada, Australia, Asian countries, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and South Africa.
